The composition for 'Autumn Automatism' was based on a design produced by the technique of 'Automatic Drawing' The method of composition was not based on a preconceived idea. It was taken from a drawing which had been produced from the subconscious mind during a telephone conversation. The automatic drawing was scaled up and a watercolour sketch was then produced to decide the colour contrasts and enhancements before re-creating the design for the painting  on canvas.
